The most beautiful cities in Hessen that I've ever visited

Being a student at Philipps- University in Marburg, I couldn't miss the chance to travel through the whole area of Hessen with our semester ticket. Since my childhood, I've loved nature. And I am a big fan of long hikes. In this post, I'd like to share with you my favorite places in Hessen.

#1 Marburg (an der Lahn)

Marburg is a small city with a population of almost 76.000 people. A significant portion of Marburg’s population consists of students because of the Philipps- University. The Philipps -University was founded in 1527 and is the oldest protestant university in the world. It offers a wide range of academic programs across various disciplines.

There are several historical places with stunning scenery to visit.

For example:

  1. The castle (Marburger Schloss or Landgrafenschloss)
  2. The Elisabethchurch (Elisabethkirche)
  3. Oberstadt with its Fachwerkhäuser (half-timbered houses)

1. The Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe Waterfall has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013. The waterfall is surrounded by stunning greenery and beautiful gardens. It cascades down a series of steps, creating a tranquil atmosphere for visitors to enjoy. If you want to see the waterfall show, visit it between May 1st and October 3rd on Wednesdays, Sundays and during holidays between 2- 4 p.m.

#3 Limburg (an der Lahn)

Limburg reminds me very much of Marburg. It is like a mini version of it. In spring and summer it is an ideal destination for hiking.

  1. Limburger Dom (Limburg Cathedral)
  2. Old town
  3. Old bridge over the Lahn, from which you have a fantastic view of the castle

#4 Frankfurt am Main

Frankfurt is one of the vibrant cities of Germany.  I have visited Frankfurt many times and there is always something new to discover.

3 places, which I am never bored to visit are:

  1. Main Tower
  2. Palmengarten
  3. Frankfurt Cathedral (Kaiserdom St. Bartholomäus) – (You have to climb up the 300 steps to reach the 66 m high platform, if you want to see breathtaking panoramic view of the city).

Palmengarten is my favourite place to visit between May and July. It’s a botanical garden with a variety of plants from around the world. If you love plants and want to escape from the noise of the big city, then this place will also be your favourite. 🙂
