Learning German online: Learn German wherever and whenever you want

Many organisations offer online services which can help you improve your German skills. Whether you have a PC or a smartphone, there are numerous ways to learn and practice German. And many of them cost nothing at all.

Well-known institutions, such as the Goethe-Institut and Deutsche Welle, offer a broad range of German language-learning programmes. Some can be used directly online from your computer, others are available as apps which can be downloaded onto a smartphone.

Deutsche Welle

Regardless of whether you prefer reading texts, listening to audio clips or watching videos, Deutsche Welle offers a wide variety of media. Among other things, you’ll find tips for beginners, vocabulary training for on-the-go and a German language training programme with ten lessons. Language courses are available in two languages, German and English. Information about German courses is provided in other languages as well, such as Arabic, Dari and Pashto.

Goethe-Institut

Not only does the Goethe-Institut offer courses for individual learning, oral exercises and videos, but also information for dealing with municipal authorities, solving problems of everyday life and looking for employment. You can access this information in German or English online wherever you happen to be. The vocabulary training app is available in 16 languages including Arabic and Pashto. You do not require any prior knowledge to use them. Many of the service are helpful if you decide to participate in a classroom-based language course.

Alumniportal Deutschland

The Alumniportal offers free German language training sessions. However, the courses are not suited to absolute beginners with no prior knowledge of German. All services and training sessions are offered in German only.

Adult education centre (VHS)

The website “Ich will Deutsch lernen” (I want to learn German) can help you master German and become socially and professionally integrated in Germany. The German course starts at the A1 level and is ideally suited to supplement a German language or integration course. On the website you will find an entertaining soap opera called “Schnitzel and Dolmades” which accompanies the German course. Courses are taught in German, but the introduction is provided in several languages including Arabic and Pashto.

Deutsch-Uni Online (DUO)

The “Deutsch-Uni Online“ (DUO) is a web portal for learning German. You can improve your knowledge of German and prepare for your studies. You may learn on your own, in a virtual course or with intensive tutorial guidance.

The “DUO” offers courses both on beginners’ and on intermediate level. There is a preparatory course for the TestDaF and advanced level courses to learn subject-specific language and acquire subject knowledge. The courses last three months and the course fee ranges from 109 to 329 euros.
