Alternative degree programmes in the medical field: Medicine is not the only option

If you’d like to study Medicine in Germany, you’ll quickly discover that it’s not divided into bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes like other subjects. There are, however, some master’s programmes in the medical field. These are research-oriented and do not allow you to practice medicine as a licensed doctor. You can study medicine-related subjects as well, such as Health and Nursing Sciences.

Nursing and Public Health are interesting alternatives to Medicine. Further possibilities are therapy-related  degree programmes, like Speech Therapy or Occupational Therapy.

Several universities in Germany offer master’s degree programmes in the field of Medicine. These are research-oriented graduate programmes whose primary intention is not to prepare students to become licensed doctors. Rather, students gain academic qualification to carry out medical-related tasks or research at university clinics and private-sector institutes. For example, there is a master’s degree programme in Molecular Biology at the University of Göttingen, a programme in Experimental and Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Regensburg and another in International Health at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
