Tests for academic studies in Germany

Most of the foreign students choosing to study in Germany have to pass some exams. We give you a short overview over the four most important exams and their  requirements.

Feststellungsprüfung

Who? Foreign students, whose school-leaving certificate is not sufficient for university admisson. The DAAD online admission database provides a general overview, whether your certificate is recognised as a qualification or not. The database of the Anabin gives you more detailed information on the same topic.
What? All subjects relevant for your studies will be tested. One of the fixed parts is a language test.
When? The foundation course usually take two semesters to complete Students who demonstrate above-average achievement may be permitted to take the "Feststellungsprüfung" after only one semester. Foundation courses provide about 32 hours of instruction per week.
Where? At universities all across Germany except for North Rhine-Westphalia.

Test for Academic Studies (TestAS)

Who? Foreign students, who want to assess their ability to cope with the demands that German universities place on their students.
What? A mix of language test, subject related questions and cognitive abilities
When? Twice a year
Where? At one of the 100 test centres worldwide

German Language Test for the Admission of Foreign Study Applicants (DSH)

Who? Foreign students, who must certify the required language proficiency for university admission, but do neither have a German Abitur, nor have passed the Minor or Major Goethe-Institut German Language Certificate or respectively have received the German Language Diploma (Level II) from the German Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Culture.
What? The DSH consists of a written and an oral part and proofs, whether you can understand German as well as speak and write it. Whoever passes the test is eligible for unrestricted admission to university.
When? Enquire at the International Office at your university for the upcoming testing dates.
Where? At your university in Germany

German as a Foreign Language Test (TestDaF)

Who? Foreign students, who must proof their German skills and would like to take the language test in their home country already.
What? Similar to the DSH the TestDaF consists of a written and an oral part.
When? Throughout the year depending on the test centre.
Where? At over 400 test centres worldwide
