At the Aliens’ Registration Office you have to apply for a residence permit. Be prepared to present the following documents on request:

Confirmation of registration from the Residents’ Registration Office
Confirmation of health insurance coverage,
Confirmation of enrolment from your German university
Proof of financial resources
Your passport and current visa, if you have one
Certificate of health
Money for the residence permit fee (enquire at the International Office about the current rate)
Your tenancy agreement
Biometric passport photos

Maxímum two years valid

After your documents have been checked your visa will be transformed into a "residence permit for study purposes". At first, your residence permit is issued for two years. In case your academic programme takes longer to complete, you must extend your residence permit once more before the two years have passed. Therefore you have to proof, that you are a regular student at a German university and have taken and passed all the necessary tests and exams. You can find detailed information on this topic on the website of the DAAD.
